Our partner Fanzingo chose to have the Hackcamp together with 20 young people from Botkyrka during their culture summer job given to them by the municipality. It usually means that we make a magazine from scratch and about four films during the three weeks they are with us at Fanzingo. This time they made “Right to the city” the theme of the whole period and incorporated the Hack Camp into the process, the development, production and presentation of the works the youth created.
Hackcamp day 1
20 young people were introduced to the theme by Fanzingo’s media pedagogues. Three activists from different organizations and networks were invited during one day to discuss their vision and experiences of right to the city issues. The youth had prepared questions and built studios where they made video recordings and interviews with the activists. This way, the first day of the hack camp introduced the youth to different ideas concerning “Right to the City”. They were then able to interpret the theme in their own ways and develop ideas for films and texts around it. They continued working with these films and texts during the rest of their 3 weeks summer job, guided by Fanzingo’s media pedagogues.
Hackcamp day 2
Fanzingo followed up with the second day of the hack camp on the last day of the summer job, when the texts and films were finished. This day officials from the municipality were invited, politicians, activists, journalists and researchers to a workshop together with the youth. Our partner invited about 40 people to that day and about 20 of them came. The youth first presented their media works to the senior audience, and answered questions in a panel on stage. After that, they had four hack camp tables with four different themes based on the films and texts that the youth had presented. The participants rotated between the tables and were given the task to formulate problems, solutions and first steps to solve the problems. Together with the 20 young people and five facilitators we were about 45 people in total.
Hackcamp day 3
About a month later, six of the young people who were part of the summer job program as well as international guests from our partner organizations in Amsterdam and Zagreb joined us during the third day of the hack camp. Participants went to visit a right to the city event called “Bostadsvrålet” (“The housing roar”) organized by other civil society organizations.
The youth presented their media works to the guests of this event and were also able to take part of other experiences of Right to the City Issues. Six young people, two facilitators, four partners from MediActivism and about 15 activists, all in all aprox 25 people, took part of the films, texts and discussion.
This picture is a a screenshot from short documentary movie “Contrast” created by a group of 16, 17 and 18 years old Therese Ackeberg, Dante Heinonen Pinto, Mathilda Nilsson and Samuel Vågstrand. These young people didn’t know each other before and some of them never had any prior media production experience. Today, we can show you only a screenshot because their work is under consideration for a premier screening at a film festival.
Check here three prototypes created in the form of interviews with local activists on the housing and their take on the right to the city issues.
All in all, about 70 people took part in the Hackcamp organized by Fanzingo.
