Somehow, I Am Scared of the Mountains

Emine Seda Kayım, 2013 | MODE Istanbul (Turkey)

“It’s not a big job. You can build a house in a minute. I mean overnight. Darling, you suffer in the village, you suffer in the city. You build it, they tear it down. You build it again; they tear it down the next day. ” ‘Somehow, I Am Scared of the Mountains’ by Emine Seda Kayım (1984), Turkey, is the story of Fadime Kayım, who had migrated to Istanbul from a village of Kastamonu during the 60’s, now lives in her “shanty apartment-building” that she built on the land she had invaded in Okmeydanı, Isrtanbul. Produced by MODE Istanbul, Turkey in 2013 for Remapping Europe, a Doc Next Network project remixing prevailing imagery of migrants.
